Survey shows how to win over Gen Y
A survey of Generation Y Australians has shattered a few myths about the age group, according to recruitment company Hays.
About 45% value job security and nearly 25% believe they should stay with employers for at least two years, the study of 1000 people aged 18-30 shows.
Almost half expect to have only four to six employers in their lifetimes.
The findings are at odds with the Gen Y reputation for being workplace iconoclasts who eschew traditional notions of career, stability and employer loyalty.
However, the age group does have distinct workplace values, and Hays says employers must be aware of what it takes to attract and retain them.
The top three keys to job satisfaction among Gen Ys are: feeling valued and appreciated (47% of respondents), financial reward (40%) and varied and interesting work (34%).
In bosses they look for a coach and mentor (50%), a leader (40%) or a confidante who is prepared to discuss private and work matters (30%).
About 23% of respondents also want their boss to be their friend.
