‘It’s a yes from us’: IAG backs Voice proposal
Giant insurer IAG has officially thrown its support behind the Voice, as the nation prepares to take part in next month’s referendum.
Eligible Australians on October 14 will vote on whether to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.
The Voice "may make representations to the Parliament and the Executive Government of the Commonwealth on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples".
For the Constitution to be changed there would need to be a majority of yes votes nationally and also in a majority of states.
“IAG’s official stance is that we support the proposed alteration to the Constitution to recognise First Peoples of Australia through a Voice to Parliament, seeing it as an important step to achieving reconciliation,” a spokesperson told insuranceNEWS.com.au.
“IAG has been a longstanding supporter of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recognition and reconciliation, and believes it’s important to acknowledge historical truths and give First Nations people a voice on the decisions and actions that impact their communities."
Australia’s other large listed insurers, Suncorp and QBE, were less explicit, but did back the Uluru Statement from the Heart, which first called for the establishment of a First Nations Voice, enshrined in the Constitution.
“Suncorp continues to actively promote reconciliation as key to building a more inclusive and resilient Australia,” a spokesperson said.
“As such, we are proud to support the Uluru Statement from the Heart and we encourage a constructive, informed, and respectful dialogue ahead of all Australians exercising their right to vote on the proposed amendments to the Constitution.”
QBE also stressed the importance of respect.
“We believe the Voice referendum is a personal choice. QBE supports the spirit of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and we encourage all our people to have respectful conversations on this important topic.”
