QBE tech chief in running for leadership award
QBE Head of Technology Helen Longland has been named as a finalist in the Women’s Agenda Leadership Awards.
The program, in its fourth year, recognises leaders who are disruptive, inclusive and inspire growth.
Ms Longland is nominated in the “emerging female leader in the technology sector” category, where she will compete against finance head Amy Foo from software company Zendesk and innovation manager Colette Grgic from start-up accelerator BlueChilli.
She was nominated for her work managing large project teams, championing agile delivery and leading the implementation of a new policy, billing and claims platform.
The platform has transformed the way QBE’s direct customers transact with the company. It has resulted in improved retention and large increases in online sales, the insurer says.
Ms Longland has also shown commitment to helping other women interested in taking on leadership roles.
QBE CIO Tony Forward says Ms Longland deserves the nomination.
“Helen has been the primary leader of the largest technology project undertaken by QBE in the past four years,” he said. “While this was led by technology, it affected so many parts of the business and Helen’s leadership undoubtedly contributed to the overall success of the project.”
When asked how she is disruptive, inclusive and inspires growth, Ms Longland responded: “By being me! I am a senior woman in a traditionally male-dominated profession (IT), in an industry traditionally led by men (insurance). I am disruptive and diverse.”
Award winners will be announced at a ceremony on Wednesday, October 5.
