Ebix chief Leon d'Apice dies

Leon d’Apice, who was MD at Ebix Australia for three decades, died on Saturday aged 68.

Mr d’Apice was responsible for operations in Australia, New Zealand and Asia and was also EVP International for Ebix.

He was seriously injured in a mountain biking accident in February 2022 and was hospitalised in Sydney for over a year for rehabilitation and required use of a wheelchair.

“It is with profound sadness that Ebix Australia announces the untimely departure of our leader and mentor,” Ebix said today.

"Ebix will be providing support and comfort to [Leon’s] family and colleagues at this time as they are coming to terms with this tragic event. Thank you Leon for everything you have made of Ebix. It truly is a life's work of achievement. You will be missed.”

Mr d’Apice’s part-owned company Complete Broking Systems was acquired by Ebix in 1996, which went on to acquire Telstra’s Sunrise Exchange transaction platform.

At Ebix’s 30th anniversary celebrations at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art in July last year, Mr d'Apice greeted industry guests, and Ebix has previously said Mr d’Apice’s inspiring journey to recovery had been a “story of resilience and determination”.

"Leon’s dedication to his rehabilitation has been unwavering and although there have been some challenges, he remained focused on his work, and between rehab sessions, it was business as usual when time permitted,” Ebix said in April last year.
