Berkley Re spotlights ‘ubiquitous’ battery dangers

Berkley Re Asia-Pacific’s latest On the Couch video series discusses fire risks linked to lithium-ion batteries.

“In this edition, we aim to shed light on the hidden dangers of lithium-ion batteries, which are now ubiquitous in our daily lives,” CEO Glen Riddell said.

“From mobile phones to electric vehicles, understanding the risks and taking proactive safety measures is crucial.”

Mr Riddell hosts the episode and speaks to Fire and Rescue NSW station officer Daniel O’Dea, who has conducted extensive research on lithium-ion battery exposures.

Mr O’Dea says fires caused by the batteries are “really different”.

“What we found with lithium-ion batteries, when they fail, they break down rapidly inside the cell and that breakdown releases toxic and flammable gas ... and we see a really volatile, fast-developing fire with jet-like flames, flaming projectiles as well,” he says.

NSW recorded a 60% rise in lithium-ion battery fires from 2022 to last year. Other states and territories have also noted sharp increases in such incidents

Last month federal and state environment ministers agreed to strengthen laws around battery disposal after a spate of deadly blazes in homes and recycling facilities.
