ICEYE to provide Australia with flood, bushfire data

Finnish satellite imagery firm ICEYE has renewed a contract to supply flood and bushfire data to the Australian government for all states and territories after last year’s $5 billion floods.

Tenders office records show Geoscience Australia agreed a $2.63 million subscription to ICEYE’s Flood & Bushfire Insight until the end of the year. That follows a previous $1.74 million contract that ran from October to June.

ICEYE, which uses 25 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites to monitor conditions, says it will boost rapid disaster assessment and response, better resource allocation and improved coordination between national and local entities.

“Understanding the true impact of floods and bushfires quickly, can transform response and improve recovery outcomes for survivors. This partnership is about bringing that transformation to federal, state, and territory-level agencies across Australia,” ICEYE Global Head of Government Solutions Andy Read said.

The Government has already been using ICEYE to support response and recovery activities across more than 30 agencies at both state and federal level. The former Lloyd’s Lab participant has analysed 18 large-scale flood events across Australia so far.

ICEYE delivers persistent monitoring capabilities for all locations. Its synthetic-aperture radar satellite constellation, the largest in the world, allows data to be collected day or night, and even through cloud cover.
