Victorian Opposition questions WorkCover hike
Victoria’s Liberal Opposition has put the acid on the state government over WorkCover industry premium rates which are set to rise for 22% of industry sectors this financial year.
Earlier this month South Eastern Metropolitan MP Gordon Rich-Phillips used question time in the Legislative Council to ask Treasurer John Lenders to justify the increase.
Mr Rich-Phillips says Government claims that of the 500 industry sectors involved in the WorkCover scheme, “more than 300 sectors pay premiums higher than the average and 155 industry sectors pay premiums more than double the average”.
He told insuranceNEWS.com.au the public sector is actually the “chief beneficiary” of low WorkCover premiums at the expense of “many industries who don’t enjoy average premium rates. They pay more.”
Mr Lenders defended the scheme by stating that Victoria WorkCover has net premium reductions of 5% across the board.
