Royal commission hearing into death building to start in June
The Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission will open a public hearing on June 25 into the collapse of the Canterbury Television (CTV) building in Christchurch.
The collapse of the CTV building killed 115 people in the February 22 earthquake. The hearing is expected to take five weeks.
Earlier this month the Department of Building and Housing released a technical report into the CTV collapse, which found the building did not comply with the standards of the day when it was built in 1986.
The report has been referred to the police and the Institution of Professional Engineers. The royal commission will consider the report and it will be able to be contested at the hearing.
The royal commission will also consider the initial building consent issued by Christchurch City Council and the construction and design of the tower.
It will cover damage suffered in the September and Boxing Day 2010 earthquakes, the evidence of staff in the building, and how damaged was assessed, particularly after the September quake.
