NSW introduces lithium battery information standard
NSW Fair Trading will introduce an information standard for lithium-ion battery-powered “e-micromobility” products such as e-scooters, e-bikes, e-skateboards, self-balancing hoverboards and associated chargers.
Information standards regulate guidance and warnings provided to consumers about goods and services, and aim to keep buyers informed of the risks.
The new standard – an Australian first – will be released early next year and will support recently announced product safety rules.
It will provide consumer advice and warnings on: fire and electrical safety; product storage; use, service and repair; road rules; and best practices for disposal.
Retailers not providing product guidance mandated by an information standard can face penalties up to $5500 for each breach.
Fair Trading says e-micromobility products caused more fires in 2022 and last year (90 incidents) than any other lithium-ion battery-powered products.
There have been 72 fires connected with e-micromobility products this year.
“NSW Fair Trading has been working closely with consumers, industry and other government agencies to ensure people are protected from the risks posed by lithium-ion e-micromobility products,” the watchdog’s commissioner, Natasha Mann, said.
“While new product standards for manufacturers, retailers and suppliers are set to come into effect from February 1 next year, an information standard will give people access to the guidance they need when purchasing one of these products.”
