Critics attack public sector insurance appointment
The appointment of former Federal ALP senator Robert Ray to a senior public sector insurance role in Victoria has raised eyebrows among critics who claim he lacks industry experience.
Mr Ray, who was a federal senator from 1981 to 2008, joined the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) board last week. The VMIA provides insurance and risk management advice to the Victorian Government and other bodies.
Mr Ray replaces Acting Chairperson Ian Gaudion, who has held the role since previous Chair Adrian Nye completed his term on December 31.
Victorian Finance Minister Tim Holding welcomed the appointment, saying Mr Ray “brings a wealth of experience and skills to the role”.
But opposition finance spokesman Robert Clark says the appointment is an “example of John Brumby’s jobs for Labor mates culture”.
A former senior VMIA employee contacted insuranceNEWS.com.au last week, describing the appointment as one of “self-interest”. He claims Mr Ray lacks the necessary experience.
