ASIC appoints new consumer protection boss

Greg Tanzer takes over this week as the Australian Securities and Investments Commission's (ASIC) Consumer Protection executive, replacing Peter Kell, who quit to take on the top job at the Australian Consumers' Association.

Mr Kell will officially hand in his ASIC keys tomorrow, the day before the Financial Services Reform Act is implemented.

Mr Tanzer is currently ASIC’s Executive Director of International Relations and Regional Co-ordination. He will fold that role into his new consumer protection job.

“Greg brings an outstanding mix of senior management experience, legal expertise and, most significantly, an in-depth knowledge and understanding of ASIC’s consumer protection responsibilities,’’ ASIC Acting Chair Jeffrey Lucy said.

Mr Tanzer joined the former Australian Securities Commission in 1992 as Queensland’s Regional Counsel. He was appointed National Manager Legal in 1994 and was ASIC Regional Commissioner for the ACT from 1997-2000.
