Victorian Government launches bushfire lawsuit

The Victorian Government has issued a writ against the electricity company responsible for the power line that caused the Kilmore-Kinglake bushfire on Black Saturday.

The writ, issued in the Victorian Supreme Court, alleges SPI Electricity and its contractor, Utility Services Corporation, breached their duty of care by failing to maintain the power line.

The February 7 2009 blaze started at Kilmore East and burned 125,383 hectares killing 119 people and destroying 1242 homes.

The State Government is seeking more than $22 million compensation from the electricity companies.

This latest writ concerning the Kinglake fires is in addition to a class action that legal firm Maurice Blackburn is running against the same companies.

The firm is acting for 1497 people with losses estimated to be as high as $1 billion.

This action is due to be heard in the Victorian Supreme Court in January.
