Insurance taxes unrest grows

The groundswell of support for the NIBA tax campaign is growing as major business groups absorb the implications of the increasing tax take on insurance.

NIBA CEO Noel Pettersen said governments can no longer ignore this issue, especially as some will face elections over the next year. “This issue is now up there on the national agenda,” he said. “Even the Prime Minister has criticised New South Wales and Victoria for making windfall profits from stamp duty.”

NIBA brokers are using specially produced materials to demonstrate the size of the problem to their clients. “They know how much these taxes are hurting,” Mr Pettersen said. “Businesses can’t afford it, and governments have got to get off their backs.”

The campaign is expected to gain even more attention – and promote debate – over the impending renewals season.
