Industry ‘must highlight social contribution’
The general insurance industry must promote its social value to attract the talented workers it needs, according to Suncorp Commercial Insurance EGM Distribution Andrew Mair.
He told the National Insurance Brokers Association convention on the Gold Coast that the industry “needs to do more to demonstrate how its people help the community get back on its feet when disaster strikes”.
Mr Mair made the call while presenting the Warren Tickle Memorial Award to the young professional broker of the year, which Vero sponsors. (see other article)
He says some people are quick to criticise the industry but the rapid response by brokers and insurers to the recent natural disasters shows it does its utmost to aid the community during emergencies.
Insurers should promote the message that “joining the… industry will mean you will ultimately be helping your community”. They should also explain the variety and growth offered by an insurance career, Mr Mair says.
“The industry is constantly seeking specialists in all aspects of corporate life, from lawyers to accountants and from risk engineers to salespeople. And on some days you find yourself being all those and more.
“Vero is all about partnering with our brokers and we see the support, mentoring and encouragement we can pass on to young people entering the broking profession as both an important responsibility and a rewarding experience,” Mr Mair said.
