IAG studies autonomous vehicle safety systems
IAG and the University of Sydney are researching ways that autonomous vehicles’ perception systems can be standardised for safety requirements.
Perception systems collect information from the surrounding environment, extract elements relevant to the vehicle and use it to navigate safely.
IAG made the announcement through iMOVE, a transport research consortium of industry, government and research figures, of which it and the university are members.
The research, in collaboration with the university’s Australian Centre for Field Robotics, will examine how such systems should be tested to guarantee safety under different operating design environments.
It will look at the development of algorithms and techniques to design and evaluate safety metrics.
It will also include a set of safety properties to create a guaranteed definition of safety.
