Experts predict severe fire season
The Bushfire and Natural Hazards Co-operative Research Centre has forecast “above normal” danger for the coming fire season across much of the country.
Low rainfall and exceptional temperatures have combined with possible El Nino conditions in the Pacific to raise fire risks in many areas, the centre’s seasonal outlook for the south of Australia says.
“Large parts of the country face above-normal fire potential for the southern bushfire season,” CEO Richard Thornton told insuranceNEWS.com.au.
“But it’s vital to remember that a normal fire season in the Australian context means that there will be fires. Areas facing normal fire potential will still see bad fire days, and fires in these areas can still cause damage to property and lead to loss of life.”
The Insurance Council of Australia says the outlook should send “a strong warning” to communities.
