UK pet claims set records

The number of UK pet insurance claims hit 1 million for the first time last year, according to the Association of British Insurers.

The industry paid out £775 million ($1.36 billion) – also a record – which amounts to about £2 million ($3.51 million) per day.

The average claim also hit a peak, at £757 ($1330). Average payouts are up 57% since 2010.

About 67% of dogs and 84% of cats remain uninsured, the association says.

The average cost of pet surgery in the UK is about £1500 ($2637).
