Committee hearings: IAG on climate
Dr Leigh is asking about IAG embargoes introduced during and following the bushfires. "Why did you do that?"
Mr Harmer says the embargoes are put in place to prevent people taking out insurance as a fire approaches.
Dr Leigh asks if any areas are uninsurable today. Mr Harmer says IAG does not insure properties on Hamilton Island due to cyclone risk.
Dr Leigh asks about uninsurability in future. Mr Harmer says that without improvements to building codes, planning processes and mitigation measures, insurance premiums will become unaffordable for some.
He agrees with Dr Leigh's assertion that "climate change is at the heart of this".
Mr Harmer refers to IAG research that shows cyclones will move south as the climate warms putting "a considerable number" of additional people at risk.
Dr Leigh asks why IAG is not giving motor customers a refund due to reduced claims following coronavirus shutdowns.
"That's short shrift for customers," he says.
Mr Harmer says the picture is not clear yet and the cost of some claims could go up due to rising costs of car parts. He says if savings are made then customers will benefit.
