Alfred claims add to wild summer for IAG customers

IAG has received more than 28,000 claims for damage caused by storms and other extreme weather events in the past few months.

About 18,107 claims for home and vehicle damage were lodged with its NRMA Insurance brand over summer and, across the group, about 10,000 Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred claims have since been submitted.

IAG provided the claims update as part of its NRMA Insurance Wild Weather Tracker report today.

“Many Australians have felt the impacts of extreme weather over the past few months … The number of claims we’ve received related to Alfred in the past three weeks is already half of the total number of claims we received for wild weather across the entire three months of summer,” the report says.

Alfred-related claims include property damage from severe wind and fallen trees, rainwater entering homes through roofs and window frames, and food spoilage due to power outages.

The IAG claims update comes after the Insurance Council of Australia said yesterday that Alfred and the earlier north Queensland floods had cost the industry about $1.2 billion in insured losses.

ICA said more than 95,000 claims have been lodged for Alfred, with the loss total nearing $1 billion.

The Wild Weather Tracker says the NRMA Insurance summer claims total of 18,107 is more than three times the number in spring last year, and is up 50% on combined winter and spring claims.

Home claims accounted for 14,704 of those lodged in summer, and motor the remaining 3403.

NSW was the hardest-hit state, producing 14,864 claims. Three wild weather events accounted for half of all summer claims in the state.

A severe storm on January 15 brought heavy rain and wind to Sydney and other parts of NSW, causing more than 4500 of the claims.

Queensland had 931 wild weather claims in summer – 778 for home and 153 for motor.

The ACT had 1751 claims, 60% of which stemmed from a hailstorm in Canberra and surrounding areas on February 5.

SA enjoyed its second-quietest season since at least spring 2016, with 129 claims.

WA also had its second most benign season since 2016. Home and vehicle claims in summer were down 9% from spring, with claim numbers less than half those of summer 2023-24.

The report monitors NRMA Insurance severe weather claims in every state and territory except Victoria, where IAG products are distributed under the RACV brand.
