AFCA flags deadline for add-on insurance disputes

The financial services ombudsman says June 30 is the cut-off for people to lodge complaints about consumer credit insurance and other add-on insurance products sold to them before July 2019.

“The Australian Financial Complaints Authority is very familiar with add-on insurance and the issues that arose in sales of this product,” lead ombudsman for insurance Emma Curtis said.

“It’s important that consumers know this deadline is fast approaching.”

CCI and add-ons came under scrutiny at the Hayne royal commission hearings in 2018, and consumer advocates have long argued for tighter laws on the sale of what they say is “junk” insurance.

Add-ons are often sold with car loans, novated leases, personal loans and home loans, or alongside finance through credit cards.

The products have also been a target of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s investigations into unfair sales practices and poor product design.

ASIC’s reviews of add-on cover sold at car dealerships resulted in insurers paying more than $130 million in compensation to affected consumers.

Most businesses have stopped selling add-ons after stronger enforcement measures were introduced following the Hayne royal commission’s final report in 2019.

AFCA says the June 30 2025 deadline does not apply to such products bought after July 2019.
