Goodbye, GIO

GIO has gone, replaced by a run-off company. The once-proud NSW state insurer became a colossus in its own right in the late 1980s, grew into Victoria and other parts of Australia in the 1990s, and sparked one of the bloodiest takeover battles in Australian corporate history before falling to AMP. (It fell apart shortly after, thanks to losses in its reinsurance division.)

With its operations and brand sold to Suncorp Metway, AMP has changed all associated names to Gordian RunOff. The move affects GIO Mortgage (now Gordian Mortgage), GIO (UK), Gordian RunOff (UK), GIO Re (Gordian Re RunOff) and GIO Re and GIO Direct (Gordian Direct RunOff). Gordian will be managed by AMP’s management division.
