XL Group has announced a key appointment as it looks to increase its share of the Australian financial lines market.

Mark Thorpe, previously at Ace in Melbourne, has joined XL as Underwriting Manager – Southern Region to build the company’s business in professional indemnity, commercial directors’ and officers’ and financial institutions insurance.

The southern states are a particular focus for XL due to spending on government infrastructure, which has increased insurance placement opportunities.

“We are looking to grow our book of financial lines business in Australia and Mark has the credentials to help us do just that,” Head of Financial Lines in Australia Ramesh Singh said.

Before working with Ace Mr Thorpe held financial lines roles at SRS Underwriting Agency and IAG.
