Suncorp scheme puts ex-offenders to work

Suncorp has teamed up with community group Mission Australia and the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) to launch a smash repair business that employs former criminals.

Synergy Smash Repairs will give training, work experience and support to young people with a history of motor vehicle-related offences.

The social enterprise and commercial business will create career pathways for people aged 16-20 and also address the dearth of new talent in the industry.

Suncorp National Industry Relations Manager Rob Bartlett, who helped develop the concept, says it is an excellent opportunity for the company’s recommended repairers to attract new tradespeople.

“It’s no secret that not enough young people are coming into the repair industry, which is why we have been working with our recommended repairers to find alternative sources of recruitment,” he said.

“This program is definitely a long-term win-win for repairers and the young people involved, with strong support and high-quality training opportunities. Suncorp is very committed to Synergy’s success.”

Synergy, which will open a North Melbourne garage next month, will be required to meet the same quality standards as any Suncorp repairer.

NMVTRC Chairman David Morgan says “traditional justice” often returns offenders to the community without the skills or support required to leave crime behind.

“The NMVTRC has therefore been a leading advocate for the expert design and delivery of diversionary programs for young vehicle theft offenders, based around technical training and the development of trade skills. We believe that’s what the Synergy model will deliver.”
