Natural hazards conference ‘packed with speakers’

The Natural Hazards Research Forum will explore topics including the effectiveness of weather warnings and the resilience of communities.

The annual conference will be in Adelaide from May 14-16, following events in Brisbane and Melbourne in the past two years.

“The program will again be packed with speakers from across the Natural Hazards Research Australia research program, as well as from emergency service agencies, government, business, not-for-profit and community,” organisers say.

Natural Hazards Research Australia CEO Andrew Gissing will deliver an overview, and the opening speech will be by National Emergency Management Agency Co-ordinator-General Brendan Moon.

Keynote speakers include GNS Science New Zealand Senior Social Scientist Sally Potter, who will talk about “impact-based” warnings, which identify the potential damage that forecast severe weather could cause. Sessions across the project streams of risk-informed decision-making, situational awareness, and resilient communities and country will be held.
