'It will make things better': Suncorp employees form Indigenous support group

First Nations employees at Suncorp are forming a resource group to provide support and advocate on behalf of Indigenous staff.

The group was pushed by Suncorp employees Gabe Ranson, Rina Abbott-Jard, and Corey Williams, who say that it will act as a voice for Indigenous Australians that was not previously available.

“This is the first time we’ve had a voice like this – and it’s not one voice, but a collection of beautifully diverse, varied and new voices,” Ms Abbott-Jard said.

The establishment comes during National Reconciliation Week, which encourages all Australians to learn about shared histories and cultures to promote harmonious relations for all.

“I feel a lot of pride for sure, and hope for the future,” Mr Ranson said. “But it’s tinged with a lot of sadness when I reflect on the past and present.”

Mr Ranson reflects on his hardships growing up as an Indigenous Australian in his hometown and says through learning his personal history, he achieved a sense of identity.

“Thirteen is an age where you’re just starting to discover who you are,” he said. “To discover a key part of your identity at that age was really tough. I began to research everything I could, and that shock gradually shifted to a combination of sadness, anger and pride.

“But the pieces also started to fall into place for me. This is why I am the way I am. It’s given me a sense of belonging now that I didn’t have before.”

Ms Abbott-Jard says that the group will have to find its footing first but in time, it will greatly assist future generations of Indigenous Australians.

“It will make things better for our kids coming through.”
