Insurance staff set sights on top jobs

More than half of Australia’s insurance professionals want to become high-level executives, according to recruiter Hays.

A survey of 1364 employees found 55% are aiming for the top, while 29% want to work in mid to senior-level management and 16% do not want a management role.

Hays Insurance Director Jane McNeill says a solid foundation and strong technical skills are important for ambitious insurance executives.

“However, above all, companies value a strong operator. Executives who have made it to the top are those who have successfully used their expertise to become excellent operators and combined their technical skills with the highest levels of people, management, communication and organisational skills.

“They also have commercial acumen and the ability to see the big picture and understand how every decision will impact the company’s future.”

Hays’ tips to get to the top include: develop commercial knowledge; improve personal qualities; make individual development plans; continue education and gain work experience.
