Insurance achievers named in LGBTIQ+ leaders list
Two insurance industry employees have been named in a prestigious Deloitte and Google assessment of the 50 most outstanding leaders for 2020 among the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and gender diverse, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ+) community.
Shay Johnston, the Chair of Suncorp’s employee resource for LGBTIQ+ staff Amplify, was acknowledged for advocating for minority groups. She also chairs Queensland’s Open Doors Youth Service.
“Although we have a long way to go, there are now more out queer senior leaders at Suncorp than I can ever remember,” says Ms Johnston, who joined the insurer at the age of 19. “The incredible leaders and staff here at Suncorp have taught me so much over the years.”
Lisa Hilton, head of technology at QBE, was also recognised. Described as a trailblazer and change agent by her peers, Ms Hilton is passionate about LGBTI+ inclusion and visibility.
“Someone once said to me, ‘if you want to work in a place where you can have your partner’s photo on your desk, then put your partner’s photo on your desk’,” she said.
“Such a simple but powerful statement. You have to take action and be brave to challenge the norm. It makes such a difference to be yourself at work.”
Suncorp says it provides a safe work environment for all employees that is free from prejudice or discrimination.
“Everyone should feel safe to bring their whole selves to work without having to hide who they are for fear of judgement or for fear that it might negatively impact their career.”
