IAG backs referendum on Uluru statement
IAG joined 13 other major organisations in uniting during National Reconciliation Week to support a referendum on constitutional reform.
It supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart, which calls for the establishment of a First Nations voice in the constitution.
Constitutional changes must be agreed by Parliament before being presented to the Australian people for a vote.
“This is an opportunity to use our collective voices to continue to drive conversation about the importance of this statement and the potential for positive change that can empower and support First Nations peoples and communities,” IAG CEO Peter Harmer said.
Other organisations supporting the Uluru statement are BHP, KPMG, Lendlease, PwC, Qantas, Richmond Football Club, Rio Tinto, Swinburne University, Woodside, Curtin University, Herbert Smith Freehills and the National Rugby League.
There have been 44 referendums since 1901, of which only eight have enacted change.
In a 1967 referendum more than 90% voted to allow the counting of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census.
IAG launched its third Reconciliation Action Plan in February, focusing on providing employment, education and professional development for Indigenous people.
