Government’s man named actuary of the year
Terrorism insurance, the collapse of HIH and reports on rising premiums in north Queensland feature on the resume of the 2014 actuary of the year – Australian Government Actuary Peter Martin.
Actuaries Institute President Daniel Smith says Mr Martin has shown the value of actuarial advice to government policymakers.
“He has been integral to the development of the Government’s responses to the withdrawal of terrorism insurance, the medical indemnity crisis and the collapse of HIH,” Mr Smith said.
Mr Martin has held the position for 14 years. He works under Treasury and advises government agencies on issues such as risk management and the costing of obligations and budget policy options.
Although it is one of the more low-key federal briefs, his reports on huge rises in north Queensland property premiums thrust him into the limelight in 2012 and this year.
The award will be presented at the Actuaries Institute’s General Insurance Seminar in Sydney on November 17.
