Disasters research group to outline progress, priorities
The Bushfire and Natural Hazards Co-operative Research Centre will present an update on its projects and national research priorities for the next decade at a conference this week.
The centre, which received funding for an eight-year program from July 2013, co-ordinates the research effort for bushfires, floods, storms, cyclones, heatwaves, earthquakes and tsunamis, and aims to increase disaster resilience.
“Some of the original projects have finalised their research, while many others are set to begin the next stage of the science,” it says.
The event will begin with the launch of priorities for the next 10 years, based on input from emergency management leaders.
The agenda also includes updates on plans to improve disaster communication and warnings, research on national building stock characteristics and mitigation approaches, plus new ways of predicting flood heights.
Researchers are also examining bushfire issues such as fuel-reduction burns and how satellite and land-sensing technologies help estimate fuel loads and soil moisture.
The two-day event starts tomorrow at the National Wine Centre in Adelaide.
