AICLA sets up seminar on silicosis in Brisbane
The Queensland division of the Australasian Institute of Chartered Loss Adjusters (AICLA) will host a breakfast seminar at Brisbane Broncos Club, Red Hill on July 13.
Wotton + Kearney Partner Cassandra Wills will present the "Silicosis – Exposure to a New Claims Dimension” seminar.
The discussion comes after Victorian compensation reforms to better assist workers and families affected by silicosis came into force last week.
Artificial stone has a high silica content and workers involved in benchtop fabrication and installation are potentially exposed to hazardous levels of silica dust, the cause of silicosis -- an irreversible, scarring disease of the lungs which has been reported with increasing frequency since 2011.
Several dozen Australian workers have been diagnosed with accelerated silicosis in recent years, some requiring lung transplants. Identification of silicosis at an early stage before symptoms can reduce exposure and improve outcomes for affected workers.
