AICLA names Carey Bird scholar

The Australasian Institute of Chartered Loss Adjusters (AICLA) has named Timothy Wong from McLarens Hong Kong as the winner of this year’s Carey Bird Scholarship.

He will attend the Asian Claims Convention in Bali next April, with airfares and accommodation paid for.

Entrants had to submit a report of 1500-3000 words based on a given scenario.

The competition was open to all AICLA members aged under 40, plus older members completing modules in the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) Diploma of Loss Adjusting.

The award was established in 2013 in memory of Marsh employee and AICLA member Carey Bird, who died in the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.

Other award winners among last year’s Diploma of Loss Adjusting students were recognised at last week’s AICLA/ANZIIF Claims Convention.

The Loss Adjusting Diploma award went to Tata Gunawan of PT Japenansi Nusantara, Indonesia, while the Charles Buchanan Prize and Syd McDonald Young Adjuster Prize were taken by Scott Reichelt from Crawford & Company International in Singapore.

Thomas Murphy of Cunningham Lindsey Australia in Queensland was awarded the Brian Geraghty Prize, and Peter Philip Brown from ASTA Group WA (Jarm Adjusting) took the Ted Cooper Prize.

The New Zealand division prize went to Gregory Bray from Crawford & Company NZ.

Mr Gunawan receives $1000 for the best performance among diploma candidates.

AICLA CEO Tony Libke told insuranceNEWS.com.au Indonesia is the fastest-growing country for institute membership.

“The major prizes were won by overseas students, and this is an indication of how our membership has diversified,” he said.
