Aboriginal broker wins Valerie Baker award
Beau Munn, from Origin Insurance Brokers in Melbourne, has won this year’s Valerie Baker Memorial Award.
He received his trophy at a special event hosted by Lloyd’s in Sydney on Wednesday.
Mr Munn, who is 23 and a descendant of the Dagoman and Gurindji people from the Katherine and Wave Hill region in the Northern Territory, will go on an expenses-paid educational trip to London where he will meet with key underwriters and brokers. He will also be given a familiarisation tour of Lloyd’s.
Now Director at Origin, Mr Munn started his insurance career at 18 and had his own brokerage by the age of 21.
“Beau thoroughly impressed the judges with his eloquence and passion to add value to his community,” Gold Seal MD Sheila Baker said.
Mr Munn says he is “hoping to act as a strong role model and mentor to other indigenous Australians who may not have considered the insurance industry as a rewarding career choice.”
The eponymous Val Baker Award celebrates the achievements of Gold Seal’s founder and is sponsored by her company, Austbrokers & IBNA Member Services and the Steadfast Group, with additional support from Lloyd’s.
