Yodas hit the road in a cheap Camry

David Duncalfe says nothing can prepare him for the Shitbox Rally later this year, when he must trek from Bendigo to Townsville in a vehicle worth no more than $1500.

The Council of Queensland Insurance Brokers GM and his friend Jason Smith will drive across regional Victoria, NSW and Queensland in a Toyota Camry (below) from October 18-26, alongside other teams.

“There’s no preparation being had,” Mr Duncalfe told insuranceNEWS.com.au. “We have to ship the car down to Bendigo before we go, and once we get there, we’re ready to start.

“We’ll be camping all the time ... and [be] provided support by event’s partners should the car have issues.”

The two-man team – named Toy Yodas – have already raised $19,140 for charity and aim to reach $50,000 by the end of the event. The Shitbox Rally overall has raised $1.47 million so far towards a target of $2 million, with proceeds going to the Cancer Council.

“While we personally don’t have someone close to us with cancer, we know how many people it affects, including within our industry, so we understood the importance of helping raise money to tackle the issue,” Mr Duncalfe said.

CQIB also raised more than $19,000 for the Cancer Council at its convention last week, through auctions and raffles. Steadfast, ATC Insurance Solutions, Vero and other industry groups provided prizes.
