Steadfast executives prepare for charity sleepout
Steadfast CEO Robert Kelly and COO Nigel Fitzgerald are among many industry leaders gearing up for a “cold and confronting” night for this year’s Vinnies CEO sleepout.
The event, now in its 18th year, will see hundreds of CEOs from across Australia take part in a night without shelter as part of a fundraising effort for homelessness.
Mr Kelly, who will be taking part in his sixth sleepout, says the night highlights the stark reality of the experiences faced by more than 122,000 Australians who don’t have a secure and safe place to live.
“Too many people and families sleep with cold, fear and uncertainty night after night, which needs to change,” Mr Kelly said.
“However, the most confronting part to fathom is that while we can return to a warm and safe home, many Australians don’t have that option.”
Mr Kelly says he’s grateful for each participating CEO for helping raise funds to tackle homelessness, noting his own experiences with the issue.
“When I was young, I watched my grandfather battle alcoholism and homelessness for much of his life,” Mr Kelly said, “He is never far from my thoughts when I participate.”
Mr Fitzgerald, who will be attending his fourth sleepout, encourages continued participation in the event, saying that every donation plays a role in helping those in need.
“For some families, it could be the difference between keeping the power on or battling the cold this winter,” Mr Fitzgerald said.
“You never think twice about spending a night outside when the stakes are that high. This is a devastating reality for many people, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to help in some small way.”
Organisers say this year’s event has already raised $6.3 million compared to last year’s record-breaking $9.6 million figure, with 1488 CEOs expected to participate in the sleepout.
The event will be held tonight at the White Bay Cruise Terminal in Sydney.
