NIBA meets with minister, inquiry head

National Insurance Brokers Association president Gary Okely and CEO Richard Klipin visited Canberra last week to discuss “matters of insurance affordability and accessibility” with government stakeholders.

The pair sat down with Financial Services Minister Stephen Jones, who spoke at the NIBA Convention in Adelaide last month.

“NIBA thanks [Mr Jones] for his insights and welcomes his deep understanding of the sector, including the value that insurance brokers provide to the Australian economic landscape,” the association said.

“NIBA looks forward to the next tranche of legislation addressing the Quality of Advice Review recommendations.”

Mr Jones told the NIBA Convention the next stage will be announced in “weeks, not months”.

“I hope to have exposure draft legislation out very, very soon,” he said. “This is all aimed at expanding access to quality affordable financial advice for the millions of Australians hungry for advice and information.”

NIBA also met with Labor MP Daniel Mulino, who chaired the parliamentary inquiry into insurers’ handling of the 2022 floods. The inquiry final report, which was welcomed by NIBA, has 86 recommendations.

“NIBA looks forward to working with government so insurance brokers continue to be positioned as trusted partners that serve Australian families, businesses and communities to manage risk and thrive,” the peak body said.
