New network aims to counter ‘cookie-cutter’ AR market

BMIA Broker Network has launched, headed by CEO David Moir and GM Debbi Thorne.

Mr Moir told insuranceNEWS.com.au the network has three authorised representatives signed up so far, and the team is working through a list set up before the launch.

Ms Thorne has four decades’ industry experience, including six years at Community Broker Network.

She was the National Insurance Brokers Association’s 2006 NSW broker of the year.

Mr Moir says BMIA was “born from the idea of having a broker network run by brokers for brokers. We have experienced being treated as a number, not being heard and our vision for our business not being understood.

“We believe every brokerage is different and needs space and understanding to grow and thrive, within the scope of best practice compliance.”

Mr Moir, an executive at Sydney’s Burbank Insurance, says BMIA is owned by a “few individual brokers” who are Steadfast members, and the network has no insurance group or corporate ownership.

The network offers Steadfast and NIBA membership, financial services licence management, claims management, compliance, broking systems support, professional indemnity insurance, trust account management, licensing and compliance audits, IT support, software system licensing, premium funding income, succession help and locum support.

The business’ name refers to Bryan McNabney Insurance Agencies. Mr Moir says Mr McNabney is a “stalwart Sydney broker” who retired recently.

“We have kept this name as a reminder of his hard work and dedication and to build on his legacy,” Mr Moir said. “Our goal is to bring a high level of service, as needed, to other brokers wanting to operate as ARs. We are here to change the look, feel and the experience in the AR world that has started to become more and more cookie-cutter.”

BMIA’s website says the business was created with the goal of “uniting like-minded professionals in the industry and fostering a culture that prioritises compliance and efficiency, ultimately freeing up your valuable time”.
