‘Intelligent, personable and articulate’: claims specialist dies
Bellrock Claims Specialist Mathew Pain died on October 23, aged 50. He was recently diagnosed with cancer and receiving treatment in Sydney.
Mr Pain worked at international brokers and insurers for 30 years and joined Bellrock in Sydney last year.
“It is with deep sorrow and regret that we share the news of our dear friend and colleague,” Bellrock said. “A lauded claims professional in the UK and Australian insurance markets, Mathew commanded everyone’s attention and respect.
“He called a spade a spade. He was so very intelligent, personable and articulate. His concern was always everyone else first. Each of us in the Bellrock team were fortunate to call him a friend, colleague, mentor and scallywag.
“We carry forward with us his legacy of compassion, wit and humour.”
Bellrock MD Marc Chiarella knew Mr Pain for two decades and says he was widely read, cared deeply for people, equality and fairness, and was “consistently straight to the point and practical”.
“I was fortunate enough to have had Mat in my corner through so many peaks and troughs in my life and career. He loved insurance, despite what he said, and it loved him,” Mr Chiarella said.
Mr Pain managed professional indemnity risks and dealt with claims for large construction projects in Australia relating to gas power stations, desalination plants, coal mines and fertiliser manufacturers.
Gilchrist Connell Principal Brett Solomon said Mr Pain had been "a larger-than-life character who touched many lives and will be most sorely missed, while Kennedys Partner Matt Andrews said he was “one of the all-time characters”.
“A client and mate for more than 25 years,” Mr Andrews said. “As razor sharp in a negotiation as he was quick with a quip over espresso martinis.”
Close colleagues from the London insurance market and other locations sent "countless messages” recounting amusing memories had in his company to claims colleague Mat Holland. Mr Pain’s sister and partner were by his side during his final days.
