Industry’s ‘masters’ offer advice on Facebook forum
An insurance mentoring group has launched on Facebook to support brokers and address a shortage of training and guidance for those new to the industry.
Josh Ryan, broker Befor’s manager of corporate and specialty, says even the most experienced professionals will “learn something new most days” on the Insurance Masters Facebook page.
“This is a great place for brokers who are new to the industry, especially those who do not work in an environment where they can be mentored,” he told insuranceNEWS.com.au.
“When I was learning, I sat with industry veterans who taught me how to think outside the box. I have no doubt the page will gather traction.”
Posts can be anonymous should anyone feel embarrassed about asking a question, he says.
“It helps brokers reach out – I think this is the real selling point, as in person, some people aren’t confident to ask questions.”
Mr Ryan also runs a Facebook group called Insurance Support Network, which focuses on risk placement.
It has almost 600 members, and Mr Ryan says it has helped many brokers place new clients thanks to suggestions from others.
The need for mentoring and guidance was raised during a recent poll of that group.
“One broker reached out to me and mentioned it would be really beneficial if we expanded and developed a separate page for mentoring,” Mr Ryan said.
“The more I thought about it, the more I loved the idea. If a broker provides guidance, that content will remain in the group and can be used by others who may have a similar question at a different point in time, and others can contribute to a conversation if they have a different view on the topic.”
Brokers interested in mentoring or being mentored are encouraged to join the group here.
