Hiller Marine goes solo as veteran adviser comes aboard

Hiller Marine has become a fully independent underwriting agency owned by its two principals and has recruited industry veteran Stephen Ford as an adviser to its board.

Policies have been issued under Hiller Marine’s own Australian Financial Services Licence since March 15 after the company previously operated as a corporate authorised representative of Sura, which held a stake in the business.

“We have enjoyed a wonderful partnership with the AUB Group over the past eight years and remain close friends with many Austbrokers and former colleagues at Sura, but we are excited by the opportunities ahead and we are looking forward to starting to offer a broader range of traditional marine products as well as exploring new product areas,” Director Neil Hiller said.

Mr Hiller, a former head of Lumley Marine & Logistics and QBE Marine Special Risks, founded the business in 2016. It is now fully owned by Mr Hiller and his son and business partner Michael.

Hiller Marine offers boat insurance, marine hull, cargo, single transit, carriers, nominated items and supply chain covers under a binding authority issued by Berkshire Hathaway.

It says former Associated Marine and Allianz Marine and Transit CEO Mr Ford has agreed to act as an adviser, providing input on strategic direction, assisting with key relationships and advising on acquisition and partnership opportunities.

“We are delighted that Steve has agreed to join us,” Michael Hiller said. “He brings over 30 years of Australian and international insurance experience and has successfully built and managed niche agencies in our market. His insights will greatly assist us in the next stages of our development.”
