WorkSafe cracks down on building site fall risk
WorkSafe Victoria will conduct a “statewide blitz” of the construction industry to address a growing number of fall injuries.
The authority says inspectors will put “extra emphasis” on ensuring building sites have appropriate safeguards.
“As a leading cause of injury in the construction industry, falls from height are always a priority for our inspectors – but they will be making this a particular focus as they visit building sites over the coming weeks,” Executive Director Health and Safety Narelle Beer said.
“The safest way to prevent falls is to work on the ground. Where that’s not possible, employers should use the highest level of safety protection possible, such as complete scaffolding, guard railing and void covers.”
The construction industry in Victoria is grappling with an increasing number of fall incidents, with 441 WorkSafe claims accepted last year – about one-third of all fall-from-height claims and the most for any sector. The industry had four deaths from falls last year.
WorkSafe has promised punitive action against employers that fail to use proper risk prevention.
“A fall can happen in just seconds and it can turn your world upside down – so there’s no excuse for taking shortcuts when working at heights,” Dr Beer said.
