WA to begin strata law review consultation

WA will next month begin public consultations on a review of state strata legislation after major reforms were introduced four years ago.

Lands Minister John Carey says the review will include strata manager practices and standards, cost controls in schemes and opportunities to enhance strata living.

The first consultation will run from October 1 until the end of the month, and a second phase will follow early next year.

“Western Australia’s strata law transformed in 2020 with major reforms delivering better buyer protections, dispute resolution and scheme management, among other advancements that modernised our state’s strata legislation,” Mr Carey said.

“The state government is now investigating the next layer of legislative change required to further enhance strata living for WA’s growing number of strata owners and residents.”

WA has almost 340,000 strata properties and it is estimated a quarter of the state population lives in strata developments such as apartments, townhouses and units. Strata titles include retail, commercial, industrial and mixed-used developments.

The review will be undertaken by state statutory authority Landgate, which assists with legislative reform, maintains land titles registry and provides valuation and mapping services.
