Take care with R&G business, says APRA
The latest in the ongoing sage of Rural & General International Insurance: The Vanuatu-based insurer, which does business through Rural & General Insurance Broking in Sydney, has been singled out by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) for a consumer alert.
R&GII is understood to be the child of former Sydney insurer Rural & General, which involuntarily lost its Australian registration last year. APRA says R&GII is registered in Vanuatu as an “exempt general insurer” and is not authorised to insure any risks within Vanuatu “or to solicit insurance business from the public within or beyond Vanuatu”.
The regulator said in a statement last week that R&GII “has been active in offering and providing insurance via Rural & General Insurance Broking in Australia.
An R&G Insurance Broking spokesman told Sunrise Exchange News that the APRA notice is unwarranted. “All we want to do is deal in insurance,” said the spokesman, who was identified as a consultant to the company.
