State hosts workers’ comp workshops

Workshops will be held across Victoria to outline the benefits of the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013 (WIRC Act).

The WIRC Act combines the Accident Compensation Act 1985 and the Accident Compensation (WorkCover Insurance) Act 1993 into one piece of legislation that is easier to use.

It maintains all current workers’ compensation benefits and continues to cover compensation, rehabilitation, return to work, WorkCover insurance and premiums.

The Victorian WorkCover Authority has organised the workshops to help employers understand their rights and responsibilities when the Act takes effect on July 1.

CEO Denise Cosgrove says interest has been “overwhelming”, with more than 1200 businesses already signed up.

“These workshops will help employers understand the features of the WIRC Act, particularly how it will help reduce the regulatory burden associated with workers’ compensation legislation.”

The workshops run from 7.30am to 9am in Shepparton (June 17), Ballarat (June 18), Geelong (June 19), Mildura (June 20), Warrnambool (June 24), Traralgon (June 25), Sunshine (June 26), Bendigo (July 1) and Melbourne CBD (July 3).
