Search begins for new disability scheme board

The terms of National Disability Insurance Agency board members expire next June 30, and Assistant Minister for Social Services Mitch Fifield says the search for fresh talent has begun.

The board is overseeing the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which goes live next year.

Senator Fifield says “the next iteration” of the board will handle the transition from 30,000 participants in eight trial regions to 460,000 participants nationally over three years, in what will be a $22 billion insurance-based scheme.

Under the NDIS Act board candidates must have skills in at least one of the following: insurance or compensation schemes, or schemes with long-term liabilities; disability services; financial management; and/or corporate governance.

“Substantial board or CEO experience, such as in a large company or significant government business enterprise, is also desirable, along with a background that includes an understanding of disability or supporting a project or enterprise of similar scale and complexity to the NDIS,” Senator Fifield said.

He says the next board will combine old and new members, and current members “are welcome to apply”.

Appointments must be approved by the Disability Reform Council, which includes all state and territory disability ministers.
