Roma flood defences reach next level
Roma in southwest Queensland officially opened the second phase of its flood mitigation scheme last week.
The State Government contributed $3.09 million to the second stage of work, with the Federal Government providing $7 million for stages one and two.
Levees and other measures will now protect more than 500 properties. The State Government has also upgraded sewer mains to protect residents and businesses.
The Insurance Council of Australia recently released a list of the top 20 federal electorates most prone to floods, in a push for increased federal funding for mitigation programs.
Roma is in Maranoa, which is third on the list with more than 31,452 land parcels exposed to flooding. Sixteen of the districts that have experienced catastrophic flooding in the past decade are in Queensland.
Maranoa Regional Council has been investing in Roma’s flood mitigation for the past seven years. Suncorp cut property premiums in the town by an average of 45% after a levee was built in 2014.
