Report brings builders’ warranty revamp closer
Reform of the Victorian builders’ warranty insurance system will move a step closer next week when State Ombudsman George Brouwer is expected to table his report on the Victorian Building Commission (VBC).
The commission is to be replaced by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) next year following consultation with the industry and interested parties.
The ombudsman’s report will be considered as part of the reform process.
The VBA will take over VBC functions, plus the Plumbing Industry Commission and the Architects Registration Board.
The reforms will also include an overhaul of builders’ warranty insurance, which Phil Dwyer, President of the Builders Collective of Australia, describes as “unworkable”.
“Builders are the underwriters but don’t get the benefit of premiums,” he told insuranceNEWS.com.au.
