Queensland joins switch to national truck regulator
Queensland is the latest state to transfer heavy vehicle regulation to the national watchdog, joining NSW, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT.
The State Government currently regulates heavy vehicles under the Department of Transport and Main Roads. The switch to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator is part of a push to provide consistency in regulations.
The state department will continue to handle compliance for passenger vehicles and tow trucks under 3.5 tonnes.
Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Bart Mellish says the department has been working closely with the national body to ease the switch.
“The transition of heavy vehicle compliance activities to the national regulator will ensure a consistent approach to compliance and enforcement and will deliver a best practice regulatory approach across all jurisdictions,” Minister Mellish said.
Only WA and NT have not signed up to the Heavy Vehicle National Law.
