Queensland Government launches disaster preparation event
The Queensland Government has launched a week-long initiative to help educate and remind its residents of the importance of protecting themselves against the impacts of severe weather.
Get Ready Queensland Week began in Brisbane and Townsville today. The latter event will host a road trip through regional Queensland to promote preparing for extreme weather.
Organiser the Queensland Reconstruction Authority says preparation for bushfires, storms, floods and heatwaves involves understanding the level of risk, preparing an emergency plan, and having the appropriate supplies to withstand such events.
It says it aims to encourage residents to prepare appropriately and create “stronger, safer, more resilient Queensland communities”.
“With a long, hot summer ahead, there is no doubt parts of Queensland will again be impacted by extreme weather,” Deputy Premier and Infrastructure Minister Steven Miles said.
“While we can’t control the weather, we can prepare for its effects and reduce its impacts.
“Since 2011 we’ve experienced more than 100 natural disasters which have left a combined reconstruction and recovery bill in excess of $22 billion.
“These are timely reminders that we can’t afford to be complacent to natural disasters and all Queenslanders, young and old, should also get ready and be prepared for the possibility of more extreme weather.”
Suncorp co-sponsors the event and CEO Steve Johnston says “now is the time” for Queenslanders to ensure they are adequately protected against the risks of an El Nino Summer.
“It was only last year that south-east Queensland and northern NSW saw devastating floods that ended up being one of the costliest extreme weather events in Australia’s history with nearly $6 billion in claims,” Mr Johnston said.
“Now we’re facing El Nino conditions and the possibility of bushfires, which can also be started by severe storms and lightning strikes.
“Now is the time to make sure you’re as prepared as you can be for any severe weather event that may be around the corner and to also check your insurance cover and what you’re covered for.”
