Public service veteran to head Queensland Reconstruction Board

The Queensland Reconstruction Board has appointed Katarina Carroll as chairperson and made two other additions to its leadership team.

Ms Carroll’s experience in disaster management includes serving as commissioner for the state’s fire and emergency services from 2015 to 2019. She was also commissioner of the police service from 2019 to March this year.

She will take over from the board’s acting chair, state police deputy commissioner Shane Chelepy, and will hold the position until August 2027.

Queensland Disaster Recovery Minister Nikki Boyd says Ms Carroll is “a stellar appointment” for the agency.

“Her unique experience on and leading our front line over more than 30 years has equipped her with extensive knowledge when it comes to disaster management and recovery in this state, as well as the work of QRA,” Ms Boyd said.

Griffith University program director for urban and environmental planning Aysin Dedekorkut-Howes and Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lynette McLaughlin have also joined the board, replacing Kirsty Kelly and Louise Abell after their five-year terms ended.

“Strengthened by Ms Carroll’s leadership and guidance, and the appointment of two new, exceptionally experienced board members ... QRA will continue doing important work every day for the people of Queensland,” Ms Boyd said.
